Self-Discipline Pacifier (SDP) is an interactive pneumatic device that inflicts light pressure on human neck for pacification. Integrating consensual user engagement, the rhythmic and moderate neck bracing psychophysically pacifies the participants and externalizes their self-harming intent to strangle. It confronts the reversibility of pain, violence, transgression vs. pleasure, care, intimacy, contextualizing human body as scalable systems of sensory organs.
SDP combines body-sensitizing touch therapy and physical intrusion to highlight touch’s importance in culturing comprehensive human experience. The project thereby explores ways of affectively influencing audiences to attend their psychophysical sensibility and complexity.
